Indesit Oven, Hob and Cooker Repair

Indesit oven and cooker repair usually starts with one of three problems: a burner that goes out when you let go of the knob, a gas oven that won't light, or an electronic oven showing F and a number. Send us the model from the rating label (often on the oven frame when you open the door) and tell us whether you use bottled or natural gas. We repair built-in ovens such as IGW 324 IX and IGESM 53 G3, the electric IFW 5530 IX, and gas hobs such as THP 642, THP 752 and IN 9522 IX.

  • Gas safety first
  • Cost before repair
  • 6-month repair warranty

Smell gas? Close the gas valve, open the windows, and don't use matches, lighters or any electrical switch, including lights. Leave the kitchen and call gas emergency 129 from a safe place. Don't look for the leak yourself.

How to light an Indesit burner or gas oven correctly

Indesit hobs and gas ovens have a flame-failure device (thermocouple) that cuts the gas if the flame goes out. It needs a few seconds to warm up, so if you let go of the knob too early, the flame goes out.

  • Hob burner: Press the knob, turn it to maximum and light the burner, then keep the knob pressed for about 2 to 3 seconds (Indesit I5GG manual).

  • Gas oven: Keep the oven knob pressed for about 6 seconds after the burner lights.

  • Not lit within 15 seconds: Release the knob, open the oven door and wait at least 1 minute before trying again.

  • Flame went out: Turn the knob off and wait at least 1 minute before relighting.

  • Hold times vary: Other Indesit models can need longer, up to about 10 seconds; your manual gives the exact time.

  • During a power cut: On some models, such as the FGIM K oven, the manual allows lighting with a match at the burner hole while you hold the knob for about 6 seconds.

Common Indesit oven and hob faults

Start with what happens when you light it or switch it on. Causes are listed from most to least common, and gas parts are always left to a qualified technician.

Hob burner won't stay lit

What you see

The burner lights but goes out as soon as you let go of the knob.

Likely causes

The knob is released before the thermocouple warms up (about 2 to 3 seconds on I5GG), the burner cap is out of place or wet after cleaning, or the thermocouple tip is dirty or worn. Less often, the safety valve itself.

Safe to try

Hold the knob a little longer, make sure the cap sits flat and the burner is dry, and wait at least 1 minute between attempts.

Technician

The technician tests the thermocouple and the safety valve and replaces the faulty one.

Gas oven won't light or goes out

What you see

The igniter clicks with no flame, or the flame dies when you release the knob.

Likely causes

The knob isn't held for about 6 seconds, the gas supply is off or the cylinder is empty, or the ignition, thermocouple or oven safety valve is faulty.

Safe to try

If it hasn't lit within 15 seconds, release the knob, open the door and wait at least 1 minute. Check the gas valve is open and the cylinder isn't empty.

Technician

The technician checks the ignition, the thermocouple, the oven safety valve and the burner.

No spark, or clicking that won't stop

What you see

Pressing the knob gives no click, or the igniter keeps clicking after the burner lights.

Likely causes

A wet or dirty burner or spark electrode after a spill, a faulty ignition switch, or the ignition module.

Safe to try

Let the hob dry completely after cleaning or a spill, and keep the burner parts clean.

Technician

With the power off, the technician checks the electrodes, the ignition switches and the module.

Weak, yellow or uneven flame

What you see

Small or lazy flames, yellow tips, soot on pans, or a smell while cooking.

Likely causes

Burner caps out of place, blocked burner holes, a nearly empty cylinder, or nozzles that don't match the gas type, for example after moving from bottled to natural gas without a proper conversion.

Safe to try

Clean the caps and seat them correctly. If there's soot or a smell, stop using the burner.

Technician

The technician checks the nozzles and the minimum-flame setting, and carries out a full conversion if the gas type has changed.

Electric oven not heating, or F and a number

What you see

The oven stays cold or heats slowly, or the display shows F followed by a number.

Likely causes

On Indesit electronic ovens, F plus a number is a software problem, according to the manual. A dead oven can also mean a power cut, a tripped breaker, or a failed heating element, fan or temperature sensor.

Safe to try

Check the breaker, switch the oven off and on, and write down the number after the F.

Technician

The technician tests the elements, fan and sensor, then the control board, before deciding what to replace.

Electric grill not working

What you see

The electric grill in a gas oven such as IGW 324 IX stays cold or cuts out.

Likely causes

A failed grill element, a loose connection, the selector switch or a safety thermostat.

Safe to try

Make sure the grill function is selected and the breaker is on.

Technician

With the power off, the technician measures the element and the switch and replaces the faulty part.

Fan keeps running after switch-off

What you see

You switch the oven off and a fan keeps blowing.

Likely causes

This is normal: the cooling fan runs until the oven has cooled down enough. It's only a fault if it never stops, even when the oven is cold.

Safe to try

Let it finish. Don't cut the power to stop it.

Technician

If the fan runs with a cold oven or never stops, the technician checks what controls it.

Converting an Indesit cooker between bottled and natural gas

Gas conversion is work for a qualified gas technician only. Indesit's manual describes it as a job on every burner, not a change of hose or regulator.

  • Nozzles: Each hob burner, the oven burner and the grill get the nozzles made for the new gas.

  • Minimum flame: The bypass screw next to each tap is reset; for bottled gas (LPG) it is screwed fully in.

  • Oven setting: The oven's minimum flame is set after about 10 minutes at maximum.

  • New label: The old gas-type rating label is replaced with one for the new gas.

  • Final test: Every burner is checked on high and low before the cooker is used again.

  3. Heat a new oven empty at 250°C for about an hour to burn off manufacturing smells.

  4. Let the cooling fan finish after cooking instead of cutting the power.

  5. Close the gas valve when you leave home for a long time.

Indesit oven and hob repair questions

Why does my Indesit hob burner go out when I let go of the knob?

The flame-failure device needs a few seconds to warm up. Press and turn the knob to maximum, light the burner and keep the knob pressed for about 2 to 3 seconds. If it still goes out, turn it off, wait at least a minute, check the burner cap is seated, and book a check of the thermocouple and valve.

My Indesit gas oven won't light. What should I do?

Keep the oven knob pressed for about 6 seconds after it lights. If it hasn't lit within 15 seconds, release the knob, open the oven door and wait at least 1 minute before trying again. If it keeps failing, stop trying: the ignition, thermocouple or valve needs testing.

What does F and a number mean on an Indesit oven?

On Indesit electronic ovens, F followed by a number is a software problem, according to the manual. Indesit hasn't published a meaning for each number, so note it and tell us when you book; the technician checks it against your model.

Is it normal for the fan to keep running after the oven is off?

Yes. The cooling fan keeps running until the oven has cooled down enough. Book a check only if it never stops, even when the oven is cold.

Can you convert my cooker from bottled gas to natural gas?

Conversion must be done by a qualified gas technician: new nozzles on every burner, the oven and the grill, the minimum flame reset, and a new gas-type label. Tell us the model and your current gas when booking so we can check the parts.

I smell gas. What should I do?

Close the gas valve, open the windows, don't use matches, lighters or electrical switches, leave the room and call gas emergency 129 from a safe place. Book a repair only after the leak has been dealt with.

Are you Indesit's own service center?

No. We're an independent repair center for Indesit ovens, hobs and cookers outside the purchase warranty. If yours is still under warranty, contact the provider on the warranty card or the shop you bought it from.

How much does an oven or hob repair cost?

The inspection and travel fee is confirmed when you book. The repair cost depends on the part, since a thermocouple isn't the same job as a control board, and it's given after diagnosis and before work, with a 6-month warranty on the repair.
