No Frost and defrost fridges

Indesit Refrigerator Repair

Indesit refrigerator repair starts with one question: is the whole fridge warm, or only the fridge section? A No Frost fridge with a cold freezer and a warm fridge usually points to the defrost system, the fan or a sensor, not the compressor. Send the model (on the label inside, bottom left) and any E-code. We diagnose from Indesit's official codes and quote after inspection, before replacing any part. We repair No Frost models such as TAAN 6 FNF and TINF70420SEG, and static (defrost) models such as LI80 FF1 K and TIAA.

Food safety first: if the freezer alarm reached the critical level, Indesit's manual says the food must not be eaten. Keep the doors closed while you wait for the visit. Don't chip ice off with a knife or anything sharp: a punctured pipe means sealed-system work, and anything involving refrigerant is for a qualified technician only.

Before you book: 6 checks on an Indesit fridge

These come from Indesit's manuals and need no tools. If one of them explains the problem, you've saved a visit.

  • Wait 8 minutes: Indesit's manual says the compressor starts about 8 minutes after the fridge is switched on or the power returns. The delay protects the motor and is normal.

  • Temperature settings: The fridge should be about +5 °C (3 to 4 °C is ideal) and the freezer −18 °C.

  • Amber light: An amber or yellow light means quick freeze is on. It's meant for about 24 hours before loading a lot of fresh food, not for permanent use.

  • Doors and seals: The door alarm sounds when a door stays open for more than 2 minutes. A seal that doesn't close all round lets warm air in and builds ice.

  • Condenser and placement: Dust on the condenser makes the fridge work harder. And don't stand a fridge directly on an Indesit freezer; Indesit says not to.

  • Static (defrost) models: On static fridges such as TIAA, frost or droplets on the inside back wall are normal, as they defrost automatically. Water pooling at the bottom means a blocked drain hole, and they cool less well in a room below 14 °C.

Common Indesit refrigerator faults

Note where the problem shows: the whole fridge, the fridge section only, or the freezer. Causes are listed from the most likely, and none is a verdict before inspection.

Freezer cold, fridge not cooling (No Frost)

What you see

The freezer still freezes but the fridge section is warm, often with ice on the freezer's back wall.

Likely causes

Most often the defrost system (heater, thermostat, or timer/board), letting ice block the airflow. Then the evaporator fan, a sensor, or a door seal letting warm air in.

Safe to try

Make sure food isn't blocking the vents inside and both doors close fully. Listen for the fan running inside the freezer.

Technician

The technician tests the defrost heater, defrost thermostat and fan, and reads any E-code, before suggesting anything else.

Whole fridge not cooling

What you see

Both the fridge and the freezer are warm, or the compressor doesn't seem to run.

Likely causes

Right after a power cut, the 8-minute compressor delay is normal. Beyond that: the power supply, the settings, a sensor or board fault, or the compressor and sealed system.

Safe to try

Wait 8 minutes after the power returns, check the socket and settings, and look for a flashing green Power light (a fault warning on models such as BAN 40 FNF).

Technician

The technician measures the supply to the compressor and board, the sensors and the compressor itself before any refrigerant work.

Runs nonstop without getting cold enough

What you see

The compressor hardly ever stops, yet the temperature won't come down.

Likely causes

A door that doesn't close or a worn seal, a dusty condenser, quick freeze left on, or a refrigerant leak, sometimes with oil marks at pipe joints.

Safe to try

Check the doors close and the seals aren't torn, switch off quick freeze if its amber light is on, and leave space around the fridge.

Technician

The technician checks the seals and condenser, then looks for signs of a leak. Finding, repairing and recharging a leak is for a qualified technician only.

An E-code on the display (E0 to E9, EE)

What you see

A letter E and a number on the display, sometimes with an alarm.

Likely causes

E1 is the fridge sensor, E2 the freezer sensor, E3 to E5 the defrost sensors, E6 the link between main board and display, E7/E8 the ambient temperature sensor, E9 the freezer high temperature alarm, and E0/EE the ice maker.

Safe to try

For E9, check the freezer door is closed properly. For the rest, photograph the code and the label and send them to us.

Technician

The technician tests the sensor or connection the code points to before touching the board.

Water inside the fridge or on the floor

What you see

Water under the crisper drawers, at the bottom of the fridge, or on the floor in front.

Likely causes

On static models such as TIAA, water at the bottom means the defrost drain hole is blocked. On No Frost models it can be a blocked defrost drain or a door seal problem.

Safe to try

Wipe up the water and check the drain hole at the back of the fridge section isn't blocked by food.

Technician

The technician clears the drain channel, and checks the defrost system and seals if the water keeps coming back.

Too much ice or frost

What you see

Thick ice in the freezer, on the back wall, or around the door.

Likely causes

On a No Frost model, visible ice usually means a defrost fault or a door that isn't sealing. On a static model, light frost or droplets on the back wall are normal, but thick ice points to the door, seal or settings.

Safe to try

Check the door closes and the seal is intact. Don't scrape the ice off with a knife or anything sharp.

Technician

The technician checks the defrost system on No Frost models, and the seal and thermostat on static ones.

Loud noise, clicking or fan sounds

What you see

A fan louder than usual, a grinding sound, or repeated clicking.

Likely causes

Some sounds are normal: the compressor, gas circulating, and cracking during defrost. A scraping fan can mean ice reaching the blades, which points back to the defrost system, or a worn fan motor.

Safe to try

Note when the noise happens (for example, after the door opens) and record a short video.

Technician

The technician checks the fan, its motor and any ice around it, and whether the defrost system is working.

Indesit fridge alarms and lights: what they mean

Indesit fridges warn you with a buzzer and lights before food is at risk. Knowing which alarm you have tells you how urgent it is.

  • Door alarm: A door open for more than 2 minutes sets off the buzzer (TAAN and BAN 40 FNF models). Close the door properly.

  • Freezer alarm, warning level: On TAAN models the first level means the freezer has warmed up. The food can still be eaten within 24 hours, or after cooking.

  • Freezer alarm, critical level: The second level means a dangerous freezer temperature, and Indesit says the food must not be eaten.

  • E9 on the display: A high temperature alarm in the freezer. Check the freezer door is properly closed, then see whether it clears.

  • Flashing green Power light: On BAN 40 FNF, the appliance isn't working properly. Call for service.

  • Amber or yellow light: Quick freeze is on. It's not a fault.

Indesit refrigerator models we repair

Send the model from the label inside the fridge, bottom left. No Frost and static (defrost) fridges fail differently, so the model changes the diagnosis.

  • No Frost fridges

TAAN 6 FNF (top freezer) and TINF70420SEG, according to Egyptian retailer listings. The typical fault is a cold freezer with a warm fridge.

  • TAAN alarms

TAAN models have a door alarm after 2 minutes and a two-level freezer alarm, and models with a display show E-codes.

  • Static (defrost) fridges

LI80 FF1 K (an older model) and TIAA. Frost or droplets on the back wall are normal; water at the bottom means a blocked drain hole.

  • Ariston and Hotpoint fridges

Many came from the same group as Indesit, so we check them by model and part number.

  • Older and imported models

Found in many homes. We work from the model on the label and check parts availability before quoting.

  • Upright deep freezers

INU6012CEG and UI6 F1T have their own guide, covering drawer models and freezer alarms.

No Frost fridge cold on top but warm below: why?

A No Frost fridge keeps cold air circulating so frost can't form. When the freezer stays cold but the fridge warms up, the cold air usually isn't reaching the fridge. Check these causes in order:

  • Defrost system: A failed defrost heater, thermostat or timer/board lets ice build up on the evaporator until it blocks the airflow. Typical sign: cold freezer, warm fridge, ice on the freezer's back wall.

  • Evaporator fan: The compressor runs, but the cold air isn't moved around.

  • A sensor: Wrong readings make the compressor switch at the wrong times. Display models show E1 to E5.

  • Refrigerant leak: The fridge runs constantly without reaching temperature, sometimes with oil marks at pipe joints. That's sealed-system work for a qualified technician only.

  • Door seal and condenser dust: Air leaking past the seal, or a dusty condenser, makes the fridge work much harder.

Indesit fridge repair cost: what sets the price?

There's no fixed price for “the fridge isn't cooling”. A sensor or fan is not a defrost heater, and sealed-system work is a different job again.

  • Before the visit: The inspection and travel fees, and what you pay if you decide not to go ahead.

  • After diagnosis: The parts and labor cost, given before we start.

  • Defrost, fan and sensor faults: Each part is tested before it's priced, so you pay only for what has actually failed.

  • Sealed system: A refrigerant leak or compressor fault needs a qualified technician to find and fix the leak before any recharge, and costs much more than an electrical part.

  • If the repair is major: We weigh the cost against the fridge's age, condition and parts availability.

Tips to keep your Indesit fridge cooling well

  1. Set the fridge to about +5 °C (3 to 4 °C is ideal) and the freezer to −18 °C.

  2. Switch on quick freeze about 24 hours before loading a lot of fresh food, and off again afterwards if your model doesn't do it by itself.

  3. Don't overfill the fridge or block the air vents inside.

  4. Keep the door seals clean, and check they close all the way round.

  5. Leave space around the fridge, and clean the dust off the condenser.

  6. Don't stand the fridge directly on an Indesit freezer; Indesit advises against stacking them.

  7. During a power cut, keep the doors closed; the compressor restarts about 8 minutes after the power returns.

Indesit refrigerator repair: your questions

My Indesit No Frost freezer is cold but the fridge isn't. Why?

Usually the cold air isn't reaching the fridge: a defrost system fault (heater, thermostat or timer/board) lets ice block the airflow, or the evaporator fan has stopped. Ice on the freezer's back wall is a typical sign, and a technician needs to test the defrost parts and the fan.

My Indesit fridge didn't start when the power came back. Is it broken?

Probably not. Indesit's manual says the compressor starts about 8 minutes after the fridge is switched on or the power returns, to protect the motor. If it still doesn't run after that, check the socket and call us.

What does E9 mean on an Indesit fridge?

E9 is a high temperature alarm in the freezer, according to Indesit's official service site. Check the freezer door is closed properly; if the alarm continues, the freezer isn't holding temperature and needs inspection.

Is the food safe after the freezer alarm goes off?

It depends on the level. On TAAN models, the warning level means the food can be eaten within 24 hours or after cooking. At the critical level, Indesit says the food must not be eaten.

Why does my Indesit fridge keep beeping?

Usually it's the door alarm: a door open for more than 2 minutes. If the doors are closed, it may be the freezer temperature alarm or a code on the display, so send us a photo of the lights or display.

Does my fridge need regassing?

Not necessarily. Weak cooling is often a defrost, fan or sensor fault. A refrigerant leak shows as nonstop running without getting cold, sometimes with oil marks at pipe joints, and a qualified technician must find and repair the leak before any recharge.

Why is water collecting at the bottom of my fridge?

On static (defrost) fridges such as TIAA, water at the bottom means the defrost drain hole is blocked. Clear the hole gently; if the water keeps coming back, have the drain and seals checked.

Are you the official Indesit service center?

No. We are an independent repair center for out-of-warranty Indesit fridges. Egyptian retailers often advertise 5-year warranties, and 10 years on some fridges and freezers, though it isn't always clear whether that covers the whole appliance or only the compressor. Check your warranty card and contact the provider named there first.
